Union Perspectives

A look at union labor and the advent of AI, the good and bad of it on working people. The bad is more people moving to hands on labor from white color, higher educated people who have lost their jobs to AI. So, hands on high school workers will be competing with people with bachelors and masters degree for jobs that will end up being a union problem. But the good news is that labor unions will have highly educated workers who will turn to labor activism and will view the economic inequality and activism is the best way to fight it. But unions must remember that the holy grail of corporations is that AI will replace all workers and this is why unions should be watching for it will happen with a thousand small cuts so unions must make the large corporations pay for the jobs that are taken by AI. About 30 years ago there was a line drawn in the sand between the Haves and Have Nots, and with the years the line got deeper until it was a ditch, but then in the last 10 years the line became a canyon with very little way for the Have Nots to get across. There seems to be some sand being put into the canyon, such as the President trying to get free education to the junior college level for everyone; there are some new labor laws from the National Labor Relations Board, which will help unionized workers; there is the Affordable Care Act; and the progress in fight for $15 an hour wage. In order to make fire or to put fire out you need the fire triangle: oxygen, fuel and heat. Take one away and the fire goes out. For the capitalists’ consumer system to thrive like fire it needs: money, demand and product, if you take one of these away and capitalism dies. How do 85 people in the world control the same amount of the wealth as one half of the world’s population or 3.5 billion people? Another way to look at this is each of the 85 richest people has access to the same resources as do 42 million of the world’s “have nots” and last year 210 people joined the ranks of billionaires. So at this time the wealth of the 1 percent is $110 trillion. Now, how do the 99 percent pry away some of this money? We must be on guard against the GOP and corporate backers of the plutocracy way of government. Plutocracy is the governing by the ultra rich and corporations. For they have a very effective strategy for how to divide and conquer, as defined in the book “Art of War.” One way they are accomplishing this is to put Obama and the Democrats in a position where they will have to do something that will anger our base. Another way, for whatever reason, is to attack unions and the working class by going after our rights. Case in point, is when California Governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, veto the card check (Employment Free Choice Act) for the farm workers.
